Considering the special position of oil industry in Iran, unique oil field of Persian Gulf, coastal countries and multiple traffic of oil carrier ships to the region, at the initial stage in order to create facilities for manufacturing small and medium vessels, Iran Shipbuilding and Offshore Industries Complex as the largest shipbuilding in the Middle East which is a subsidiary of Industrial Development & Renovation Organization of Iran (IDRO), was established in 1973 in an area of 1100 hectares, 37 km West of Bandarabbas.
In the second phase in order to make the development of equipment and facilities required for the construction and repair of large tankers of 3000 tons and gas carrier of 140000 cubic meters, construction plan of dry docks and industrial workshops in an area of 130 hectares for 5098 employees was begun. This phase has made Iran the hub of shipbuilding industry in the region as well as covering inside and outside requirements of the country since 2002.
Also in 2001, in order to expedite customs clearance as well as import necessary materials and equipment, total area of 1100 hectares of the site with the permission of Supreme Council of Iran’s Free Trade, Industrial & Special Economic Zone, was converted to Persian Gulf Shipbuilding Special Economic Zone. In 2013, permitted activities were amended by the new legislation of Supreme Council of Iran’s Free Zones.
